St. John’s Square
John McLean + Frances Aviva Blane
9 February – 18 March 2000
Derelict, decaying buildings that are the by-product of urban change have a fascination. Each one carries its own history and memories from the past. They suggest abandonment absence, emptiness and loss.
The ‘Smiths building’ on St John’s Square was a temptation to show the large white empty paintings by Frances Aviva Blane, and to contrast, and even challenge them with John McLean’s colourful dancing shapes. Both artists transformed the space in a fascinating way.
